Lebanon is home to some of the most precious and delicate ecosystems, including the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal. These seals are an endangered species, desperately in need of quiet, undisturbed habitats to thrive, reproduce, and continue their fragile existence. However, a current grave threat is encroaching on one of their few remaining shelters: the illegal construction of a 'celebrity' villa on the coast, precisely ON TOP of where these creatures find refuge.

This construction not only violates laws protecting endangered species, but it also jeopardizes the very future of these monk seals by destroying their rare natural habitats. The Mediterranean Monk Seal is a symbol of Lebanon's rich marine biodiversity and we cannot let (ilegal) commercial interests trample over their right to exist in peace.

Legal protections were established for a reason. The Barcelona Convention on the Conservation of Maritime  Wildlife and Natural Habitats, signed by Lebanon and a host of Mediterranean coast bearing countries , clearly mandates the safeguarding of such critical environments. Ignoring these commitments for the sake of luxury is tantamount to environmental crime.

We demand an immediate halt to this illegal construction. Authorities must enforce existing regulations rigorously and hold accountable those who violate them. Implementing stricter monitoring and penalties on construction activities near endangered species habitats is crucial and on national legal mandates .
