Stop the hyperscale data centre in residential area Balkum, Thane

The Issue

In recent months, proposals have emerged for the construction of a hyperscale data centre in Balkum, Thane. While the advancement of technology and infrastructure is crucial for economic growth, it is imperative that such developments do not compromise the quality of life and safety of local residents. The proposed site for this data centre is surrounded by residential communities, schools, and areas frequented by the public daily.

There are several reasons why the construction of a hyperscale data centre in this location is problematic. Firstly, these centres require significant infrastructure, including power lines, cooling towers, and enhanced security measures. This could result in increased noise pollution and a potential rise in the local temperature due to heat generated from the cooling systems. Such changes would disrupt the tranquility and safety of our neighbourhoods, affecting the lives of not just adults but children and the elderly as well.

Furthermore, the heavy traffic and large vehicles associated with construction and later operation could pose severe risks to pedestrians, especially school children and those commuting to work. This influx of industrial activity contradicts the ethos of a residential area designed for community and family life.

While we acknowledge the importance of technological and economic development, the placing of a data centre in such a densely populated residential region lacks foresight. There has been insufficient public consultation, and residents have not been given the opportunity to voice their concerns or offer alternatives.

Instead of indiscriminately placing heavy industrial structures in urban zones, holistic city planning should prevail. Decisions should include input from urban planners, environmentalists, and most importantly, the residents whose daily lives will be affected. We need sustainable, community-approved solutions that consider environmental impacts and prioritize residential welfare.

We urge the authorities to halt this project and engage in transparent consultations with the local community. Let us prioritize intelligent urban planning that allows for progress without compromising our residents' quality of life or undermining public wellbeing.

Please sign this petition to show your support for responsible planning and to protect our neighbourhoods from becoming industrialized zones.
