Stop the harmful, forced university MERGER in West Australia!
The Issue
Murdoch University is being pushed toward a merger that risks damaging the quality of education, student experience, and identity of our campus.
We are calling on university leadership, the State Government, and relevant decision-makers to pause any merger plans until there is full transparency, proper student consultation, and clear evidence that any change will actually put STUDENTS FIRST!
Why this matters:
Students already face rising costs, limited support, and a guild that doesn't deliver. A poorly handled merger could make things worse by:
- Reducing course choice and campus resources.
- Weakening Murdoch’s distinct identity and culture.
- Leading to larger class sizes and less student support.
- Prioritising financial or administrative goals over education quality.
Murdoch students deserve a university that puts Students First — not one that is restructured without their input. If we wanted this, sure, go ahead - but no one even asked us!
What we’re asking for
- Full public disclosure of any merger plans and the evidence behind them.
- Meaningful consultation with students, staff, and the broader community before any decision is made.
- Clear guarantees that student experience, course quality, and campus services will be protected.
- No merger to proceed unless it can be shown to genuinely improve outcomes for students, and will always put Students First.
We, as students, were not born 'anti-merger '. We have become opposed to this merger plan.
We are not inherently opposed to university changes. If the government says the merger would be so fantastic for everyone, why don't they tell us their plan and make guarantees that everyone involved will not be worse off (and allow us to get behind it then)?!
Sign this petition to demand that Murdoch University is protected from a harmful merger, and that students are properly heard and listened to before any major structural changes are made.
