The proposed Hampton Bays Sewage Treatment Plant, in a Critical Resource Area of the Central Pine Barrens, threatens to disrupt the delicate ecosystem of our community, impacting the quality of life for residents and the rich diversity of wildlife that calls this area home. Located in the picturesque hamlet of Hampton Bays on Long Island, New York, this development raises significant environmental and health concerns that cannot be overlooked.

One of the primary concerns is the potential for groundwater contamination. The area is underlain by the Upper Glacial Aquifer, a precious source of water for thousands of residents. Introducing a sewage treatment facility risks leakage or overflow that could contaminate our drinking water, putting residents at risk of potentially severe health issues. This plant will also compromise the environment of Flanders Bay and the Peconic Estuary.

Moreover, the plant poses a threat to local wildlife. Hampton Bays is home to a variety of species, many of which depend on the clean water and undisturbed habitats that would be compromised by this development. For example, investing in advanced decentralized systems could provide effective waste management without the significant downsides of large sewage plants. Another option could be enhancing existing septic systems to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
