SP Energy Networks is proposing a large primary electricity substation on Main Street, Guardbridge, impacting the historical visual integrity of the village at it's northern gateway. The proposed site will be located directly against gardens on Innerbridge Street, the oldest residential part of the village, and on the route children walk to the primary school.

SPEN's own planning documents confirm their preferred site was elsewhere on Eden Campus, away from homes. It was ruled out because it conflicted with the University of St Andrews's own development plans for that land.

This means a permanent industrial structure, fenced and floodlit over back gardens directly on Main Street, will be a visual scar at the entrance to the village and the loss of the peaceful, settled amenity that makes Guardbridge a great place to live.

To be clear, we are not against the electricity network being upgraded. We are against this site, chosen through a process that appears to put the university's commercial interests ahead of the people who live here.

Our understanding is that this will go before Fife Council's North East Planning Committee on 19th August. We are asking the Committee to refuse the application as currently sited, and for SPEN and the University to revisit alternative locations.
