The Issue

The governor's office has announced that a live tiger will be brought onto the field for the LSU football game on Saturday, 11/9/24. Creating an atmosphere of excitement and school pride should never come at the expense of an animal's welfare. It is traumatic for a wild creature to be exposed to the noise, lights, and crowd of a football stadium. Furthermore, according to the Animal Welfare Institute, the artificial atmosphere of such events can induce stress, affect the animal’s physical health, and lead to abnormal behaviors.

Mike the Tiger was brought onto the field during football games until around 2016, but LSU, in conjunction with LSU's nationally renowned vet school, decided to put a stop to this tradition because of the negative health effects on the tiger. Bringing in another tiger does not solve the issues pointed to just a few years ago! We ask that the governor put his nostalgia aside and prioritize ethical treatment of animals and find other non-exploitative ways to boost team spirit and fan morale. Please join us in urging Governor Jeff Landry to call off the use of a live tiger mascot in the LSU football game on 11/9/24. Sign the petition now!

**Edited to change the "decision maker" from LSU to Governor Jeff Landry after speaking with multiple people employed by LSU who have expressed that the university does not support this decision made by the governor.
