The Issue

Anza Borrego Desert State Park holds a special place in my heart and countless others who cherish the fragile beauty and ecological significance of this unique landscape. As the largest state park in California, Anza Borrego is not just a natural wonder but also serves as a sanctuary for endangered species like the Least Bell's Vireo. Yet, this oasis is at risk from the proposed Golden Pacific 500KV power line, which threatens to slice through the heart of this pristine desert park.

The envisioned path of this power line would necessitate the clearance of vast swathes of land, hundreds of feet wide, to make way for the infrastructure required. This clearing would lead to devastating environmental impacts including habitat destruction and increased vulnerability for the already endangered species that call this park home. The desert environment, which is characterized by its resilience, faces a struggle against an intrusion so profound that it could cause irreparable damage to its delicate ecosystems.

Anza Borrego's topography and biodiversity make it an unsuitable location for such development. There are alternative routes and methods that would minimize environmental degradation and preserve the park. Renewable energy solutions, along with intelligent planning, could allow for the necessary infrastructural developments while safeguarding our precious landscapes.

According to a study by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Anza Borrego hosts over 100 desert animals and 900 species of plants, many of which will be negatively impacted by this proposal. We need to prioritize sustainable growth and development that considers environmental preservation at its core, ensuring that our state parks remain untouched, vibrant habitats.

Our call to action is simple: revisit the plans and routes for the Golden Pacific power line, seeking alternatives that do not compromise the ecological integrity of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. We must urge authorities and stakeholders involved in this project to protect the natural environments that are vital to our ecological heritage and community well-being.

I urge you to sign this petition and help save Anza Borrego Desert State Park from becoming just another casualty of infrastructural expansion. Together, we can advocate for smarter strategies and keep this treasured landscape and its inhabitants safe.
