✨ Petition Update – October 2025
First of all, thank you. Over 2,300 of you signed this petition and made your voices heard. That support has been incredible and has shown just how much Ashford cares about protecting its High Street.
On 8 October 2025, the Spelthorne Licensing Sub-Committee heard the application for an Adult Gaming Centre at 39 Church Road. I spoke at the hearing on behalf of the Ashford Residents Association and local residents. After hearing all the evidence, the Sub-Committee refused the licence.
This is a major victory for Ashford. The panel recognised that:
- Our High Street already struggles with anti-social behaviour and crime.
- The location is surrounded by schools, care homes, bus stops and youth services, making it unsuitable for a gambling venue.
- Even with strict conditions, the risks to children and vulnerable people could not be properly managed.
The developer has invested heavily and may now choose to appeal the refusal to the Magistrates’ Court. If they do, we will need to stand together again to ensure the decision is upheld.
The petition remains open because your continued support sends a clear message: Ashford does not want or need a 24-hour gambling centre at the heart of our community.
What’s next:
We will keep residents informed if an appeal is lodged.
The Ashford Residents Association will continue to coordinate and represent local voices.
Your signatures and comments will remain part of the evidence of overwhelming community opposition.
Thank you once again to everyone who signed, shared, and spoke up. Without you, this decision would never have been possible.
✊ Together we’ve shown that Ashford can stand up for itself, we’ll be ready again if needed.
With thanks,
Nik Urquhart
