STOP THE FOUNTAIN AVE BIKE LANES

The Issue

STOP THE FOUNTAIN AVE. BIKE LANES

While bike lanes can make things safer for cyclists, Fountain Ave. is simply too narrow.

The City of West Hollywood, City Council majority, VOTED to REDUCE FOUNTAIN AVE. to ONE LANE in either direction, in order to install protected bike lanes, reducing residential street parking by 150+ parking spaces - with no plan as to where 150 people will park. Traffic, already a nightmare, will be exacerbated.

Outreach by the city appears to have failed and as a result there was no significant input from the community, especially those most impacted. There are residents of both West Hollywood and Los Angeles who still have no idea that this is coming.

  • Culver City, Beverly Hills and South Pasadena are already REMOVING some of their bike lanes, in part due to public backlash.
  • The West Hollywood first responders: LA County Fire Department and LA County Sheriff were not consulted in the initial planning.

While it is laudable to try to get people out of their cars, according to the US Department of Energy, an idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling 32 miles per hour. Traffic Jams = Idling = Pollution.

CONCERNS:

  • LOSS of PARKING.
  • Limited Left hand turn lanes.
  • 900 cars/hour diverted to Santa Monica Blvd., Sunset Blvd., and neighborhood streets.

No place for vehicles to pull over:

  • Emergency vehicles
  • Passenger drop off/pickup, including disabled, seniors, children.
  • Deliveries
  • Trash trucks/street sweeping
  • Gardeners, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc.

The Fountain Ave. bike lane project could potentially cost 35-40 million dollars.
