The Issue

Residents of the Miami Soar Mobile Home Park in Miami-Dade County are presently in a battle against displacement from their landlord. If allowed to proceed freely, the developer would displace over 1,000 residents without any comparable affordable housing options in the area. Many of these residents have purchased their trailers with cash or financing, like many looking to achieve the reality of stable and affordable housing, and the American dream of homeownership. Remedies provided by Florida Statute would only constitute a fraction of the equity homeowners have in each property.

More broadly, the struggle of Miami Soar Park Mobile Home Park residents represents the cascading effects of the ongoing housing crisis in South Florida. An estimated half of Miami-Dade county residents presently are cost burdened by housing, meaning that they pay over 30% of their income on housing-related expenses. The financial implications of the housing crisis are felt more acutely by individuals who identify as Black, Latino, women, and immigrants. Contemporarily, mobile home parks have been important in demonstrating the limitations of affordable housing, especially in Miami-Dade County.

With very few legal remedies to alleviate financial burdens, the residents of the SOAR Mobile Home Trailer Park are looking to galvanize support. The support of elected and appointed officials, faith-based leaders, and grassroots organizations who commit themselves to fighting displacement are essential to the success of this campaign.

Sign this petition to voice your support for the residents of the Miami Soar Mobile Home Park, and demand that Miami-Dade County officials take a stand on the side of Miami Soar Park residents, and others who might be facing unjust displacement in Miami-Dade. Together, we can make a clear statement: These residents have rights as owners that should be respected and that nobody should have to face unlawful and unjust displacement. With Miami Soar Mobile Home Park residents' potential displacement looming, THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!
