STOP THE FEEDLOT
The Issue
Subject: Opposition to Proposed Cattle Feedlot in Sadler, Texas
We, the undersigned residents, landowners, and concerned citizens of Grayson County and surrounding communities, respectfully submit this petition in opposition to the proposed 400-800 head cattle feedlot development planned for a 12 acre parcel near Gilbreath Road in Sadler, Texas.
Statement of Concern:
While we recognize the importance of agriculture to our region, the proposed feedlot raises serious concerns regarding its potential impact on our community’s health, environment, and quality of life.
Key Concerns Include:
1. Water Quality Risks
The proximity of the proposed feedlot to local waterways and groundwater sources creates a risk of contamination from runoff, waste lagoons, and nutrient pollution particularly concerning with our sandy soils.
2. Air Quality and Odor
Large-scale cattle operations generate significant odors, particulate matter, and emissions that can negatively affect residents’ health and daily living conditions well beyond the property line due to the strong winds common in the area.
3. Property Values
The presence of a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) threatens decreased property values and could limit future residential and agricultural development.
4. Increased Traffic and Infrastructure Strain
Additional heavy truck traffic associated with feed delivery, waste removal, and livestock transport will further impact Hwy.901 not designed for such use and will create dangerous conditions for residents, school buses, and emergency vehicles.
5. Environmental Impact
The concentration of animal waste in a confined area poses risks to soil health, wildlife, and the overall ecosystem.
6. Incompatibility with Surrounding Land Use
The proposed site is near rural homes, small farms, large ranches, a vineyard, and a farm-to-market business which are not compatible with an industrial-scale concentrated animal feeding operation.
