Stop the Extreme School Phone Ban in Texas

Stop the Extreme School Phone Ban in Texas
The Issue
Fort Worth ISD just passed a policy banning students from using cellphones throughout the entire school day—even during lunch and between classes. Under the new rules, students can’t check in with family, use time management apps, or access online tools—even during their own free time.
Yes, there are exceptions for medical needs and learning plans. But for most students, this is a blanket ban—one that ignores how phones are part of modern life, learning, and safety.
Even worse, students who break the rule could face in-school suspension for simply checking a text. That’s not about discipline. That’s about control.
We’re calling on Fort Worth ISD to revise this policy. Students should not face suspension for harmless phone use during non-instructional time. The district must build trust, not punishment, into its approach—and recognize that responsible phone use is a skill, not a threat.
Add your name if you believe students deserve smart policy, not blanket punishment.
