The decision by the town of Canmore to hire an exterminator to trap and kill two beavers in Spring Creek is both disgraceful and barbaric. These beavers, Canada’s national symbol, have become the targets of misguided action simply for following their natural instincts. In Canmore, citizens are told to secure their garbage, protect the trees, and give wildlife the space it needs to thrive. We are in a community that promotes living harmoniously with nature. Yet, when beavers create small inconveniences, the default solution is extermination.

These particular beavers were not causing harm or posing any threats. They were not entering homes, nor were they aggressive. They were merely engaging in activities inherent to their species, crucial for maintaining ecological balance. Beavers play a vital role in creating wetland habitats, increasing biodiversity, and supporting other wildlife.  Canmore doesn’t include beavers in its wildlife coexistence strategy.

The town's action disregards ethical wildlife management principles and damages the environment they have pledged to protect. There are humane alternatives, such as utilizing exclusion fences or employing flow devices to manage water levels in beaver ponds. The community's energy and resources should be directed towards these sustainable solutions rather than killing these innocent animals.
