Stop the Expansion of the Nucrush Oxenford Quarry

Stop the Expansion of the Nucrush Oxenford Quarry
The issue
We, the undersigned residents, community members, ratepayers and supporters, call on Gold Coast City Council, the Queensland Government and all relevant decision-makers to continue opposing any further expansion or long-term continuation of the Nucrush Oxenford Quarry.
This petition does not seek to interfere with any court process. It is a public statement of community concern about the long-term planning, environmental, health, safety and amenity impacts of expanded quarrying in Oxenford and surrounding northern Gold Coast communities.
Gold Coast City Council refused the quarry expansion application in 2021. That refusal was appealed by Nucrush and remains before the Planning and Environment Court. Residents support Council’s original refusal position and ask that the community’s concerns continue to be properly heard and considered.
The Oxenford quarry is no longer isolated from residential development. It sits near established and growing communities, homes, families, schools, roads, waterways and environmentally sensitive areas. Public reporting has identified that quarry expansion would bring operations closer to residential areas and that the Coomera River catchment is a relevant environmental concern.
Residents are deeply concerned about the cumulative impacts of long-term quarry operations, including blasting, vibration, industrial noise, heavy vehicle movements, dust, visual amenity impacts, environmental impacts and uncertainty for surrounding communities.
Residents also hold serious concerns about potential exposure to respirable dust, including crystalline silica and airborne particulate matter associated with quarrying activities such as blasting, crushing, stockpiling and haulage. These potential impacts should be independently and transparently assessed, particularly for children, elderly residents and people with existing respiratory or health conditions.
Residents have also raised concerns about blasting vibration, flyrock safety and potential structural impacts on nearby homes, buildings, foundations and infrastructure over time. These concerns should be properly investigated and independently monitored before any further expansion or long-term continuation is supported.
The community remains concerned about impacts to groundwater, stormwater management, waterways, native vegetation, ecological corridors and the broader Coomera River catchment. Concerns have also been raised publicly about separation buffers, haulage routes, traffic impacts, environmental management, planning compliance and the adequacy of technical material relied upon in support of the proposal.
Residents are also concerned about repeated extensions of time, prolonged legal processes and declining public confidence in the transparency and accountability of decision-making surrounding the quarry proposal. The community deserves clear, open and evidence-based decision-making on a matter that directly affects local health, safety, amenity, environment and future liveability.
The northern Gold Coast should not be forced to accept the long-term intensification of industrial quarrying within an established and growing residential corridor unless all planning, environmental, health, safety and community impacts have been fully and transparently addressed.
We call for:
- Continued opposition to any further expansion of the Nucrush Oxenford Quarry.
- No further long-term extension of quarry operations unless all planning, environmental, health, safety and community concerns have been independently assessed and resolved.
- Transparent, evidence-based and accountable decision-making.
- Proper consideration of cumulative impacts on residents, local amenity, health, safety and the environment.
- Independent monitoring of blasting, vibration, dust, respirable crystalline silica, noise, groundwater and water discharge impacts.
- Protection of waterways, ecological corridors, native vegetation and the Coomera River catchment.
- Genuine consultation with affected residents and surrounding communities.
- A clear long-term rehabilitation and restoration pathway for the quarry site.
This community is not asking for special treatment. We are asking for proper process, transparent decision-making and protection of residents, homes, health, safety, waterways and the future liveability of Oxenford and the northern Gold Coast.
Protect Oxenford. Protect our community. Oppose the quarry expansion.
