Stop the expansion of County Road 557 in Farmersville
The Issue
There is a plan underway to dramatically alter the landscape of County Road 557 in Farmersville, Texas. This project, with a staggering budget of $8 to $10 million, aims to transform our quaint, two-lane country road into a bustling four-lane cut-through, facilitating traffic from Highway 78 to 380. As someone whose life is deeply intertwined with this area, I feel compelled to oppose this transformation and voice the concerns shared by many residents in our community.
My family's home is here. We've lived with the charm of this small road for years, but the recent surge in traffic due to rapid regional growth has brought unsettling incidents. We've had cars crash into our fences, obliterate our gate, and in some heartless cases, even involve acts of animal cruelty. Most distressingly, my elderly father, aged 73, has had terrifying near-misses while crossing to check the mail. This is not just infrastructure development; it's putting lives and safety at risk in a place we call home.
Our country road simply does not have the infrastructure to safely support 14,000 cars traveling per day. These plans to extend our road into a high-traffic throughway are not only costly but unnecessary and potentially harmful. What was once a peaceful retreat from the noise of city living is at risk of becoming part of the urban sprawl. Now is the time to act and maintain the character and safety of our community.
We propose alternative solutions that would preserve the integrity and character of our road. Options include restricting through traffic by closing sections of the road with a cul-de-sac design. This would protect residents and prevent our road from being overwhelmed with non-local traffic. Such measures would undoubtedly be more fitting, considering the personal and environmental stakes involved.
In making these changes, we can ensure the safety of our residents, protect our properties from further damage, and maintain the serene environment that makes our county so special. Join us in protecting County Road 557—because some things are worth preserving.
Please sign this petition to urge the city to reconsider and implement a safer, more community-friendly plan for County Road 557.
