Stop the expansion of Airbnbs in Port Douglas-Daintree

Le problème

Having been a resident of Port Douglas for over 20 years, the growth of Airbnb properties in our community has significantly affected my friends and neighbors. Many long-term locals, including those I know personally, are being forced out of their homes to make way for short-term vacation rentals. This situation is escalating the local housing problem, especially during peak tourist seasons.

At present, there are 972 active Airbnb listings between Port Douglas and Daintree, according to a recent analysis. The proliferation of these properties in residential areas is making it increasingly difficult for local residents to find affordable, long-term rental options. The trend not only disrupts established communities but also displaces families, undermining the stability and cohesion of our neighborhoods.

Furthermore, the imbalance can lead to increased property prices, making homeownership unattainable for many locals. Studies have shown that excessive short-term rentals contribute to hiking up rental costs, subsequently pushing locals out of the housing market. This is not just a housing issue—it's a matter of community viability and sustainability.

The local government must take decisive action. We need clear regulations that restrict the number of new Airbnbs and a policy to reduce existing rentals in residential zones. By drawing boundaries and enforcing strict rules, Port Douglas can safeguard its community dynamics and ensure that locals can live and work in the area affordably.

Your support in signing this petition is critical. Calling on our local government to put an end to the rampant growth of short-term rentals will help restore balance to our housing market. We must act to maintain the future of Port Douglas as a vibrant, inclusive community for all residents.
