Richard Bernard Moore was convicted of the September 1999 murder of James Mahoney, a convenience store clerk, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Richard's case has gotten attention because of two choices that the state of Carolina South gave him, electric chair or firing squad. When he was scheduled for execution and he chose to be executed by firing squad under the state's new controversial capital punishment laws. Moore was set to become the first person to be executed in South Carolina in over a decade, as well as the first person in the state to be executed by firing squad. However, his execution was stayed by the South Carolina Supreme Court on April 20, 2022. The punishment don't fit the crime and Mr. Moore should be held accountable for what he did, but by a three man firing squad, that's cruel and unusual punishment. I am asking that Mr. Richard Bernard Moore, my brother to be granted clemency and for a stay on his execution date, April 29th, 2022 at 6am. My brother has been on death row for two decades. He's a changed man, he's no longer that person he was when he committed the crime. On behalf of myself, my family and Mr. Richard Bernard Moore plus those who signed this petition are asking to stop the execution and just let him live the rest of his life out in prison.
