Last night’s LUPZ meeting emphasizes the importance of emailing your city councilors and keeping the petition strong.
Despite opposition having a physical presence, emailing city council members and signatures on the petition gave us the real victory.
-We presented 832 petition signatures from Albuquerque residents with comments. The opposition only had 300 form signatures.
-An amendment was passed to remove the illegal addition of forced rezoning on nearly all single family homes. (A step in the right direction, but thousands could still be rezoned along mass transit corridors, so the fight continues).
-City Planning were forced to recognize that rezoning will remove the 3% cap on how much property taxes can increase. They also had to acknowledge that people can be reassessed on their taxes and it could increase them.
-The vote for the IDO amendments was postponed and will be heard by a new LUPZ committee with members TBD.
So keep emailing the city council about this and keep the petition strong by sharing with family and friends who live in Albuqueure.
Remember what is at stake:
-Forced rezoning on thousands along mass transit corridors and activity centers that allows for higher property taxes, impacting seniors and low income families.
-Removal of community notice, input, and self-determination.
-No guarantees against private equity/ developer price speculation.
-No mandated affordable housing of any kind
-No planning for water or environmental impacts.
-No measures against apartment and rental ownership by major investment corporations.
-Removal of zoning restrictions that protect historic neighborhoods and The Petroglyphs.
-No Anti-Displacement measures.
-No protection for low-income tenants.
-No impact studies on racial inequity.
Please continue to keep the messaging strong to our elected officials.
Thank you!
