I am writing this petition because the threat of losing permanent supportive housing is not just a story on the news for me. It is a reality, a nightmare that looms every day. I am a senior, and like many others in San Francisco, I rely on this housing to live with dignity. The thought of being displaced and forced onto the streets is terrifying. We, seniors and disabled individuals, have contributed to the community, invested in this city's promise of care, and now find ourselves facing homelessness due to the actions of Mayor Lurie and the Board of Supervisors who seem to prioritize tax cuts for billionaires over the basic needs of longtime residents.

In San Francisco, over 9,000 disabled and senior residents depend on permanent supportive housing to survive. This housing provides essential stability, medical support, and the community connections necessary for a dignified life. Studies show that housing security directly correlates with better health outcomes and overall well-being. According to Project Homeless Connect, the estimated life expectancy for people experiencing chronic homelessness is over 20 years less than that of the general population.

Mayor Lurie's decision to cut taxes on billionaires while dismantling the supportive housing structure is not only unjust but detrimental to the welfare of thousands who will be left with nowhere to go. This is a call to the city’s leadership to reconsider these devastating cuts. Supporting our vulnerable populations should take precedence over further enriching the wealthy.

We urge the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to protect and fund permanent supportive housing. The proposed policies will strip away the security of our most vulnerable residents, putting lives at risk. There are alternative solutions, such as finding budget efficiencies elsewhere, increasing housing funds through equitable taxation, and reallocating city resources to support social services rather than tax breaks.

Our community's strength is measured by how we care for each other, especially the aging and disabled who have helped build this city into what it is today. Let’s stand together to ensure that they are cared for in return.
