It’s now been over two months since our family—my disabled veteran husband, our two children, and I—were made homeless by the Ministry of Defence.
We are split between two rooms in a Travelodge in Lincoln: my husband Stuart and our teenage son in one room, and me and our daughter in another. We have no access to basic household amenities. Stuart, who is wheelchair-bound and in constant pain due to service-related injuries including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and spinal damage, is stuck in a hotel room all day with no rehabilitation or independence.⁹
West Lindsey District Council has failed to find us suitable, accessible accommodation despite occupational therapist reports, GP letters, and medical evidence of Stuart’s urgent needs. The MoD evicted us without offering any reasonable adjustments, support with relocation, or consideration of his disability—breaking the Armed Forces Covenant and violating principles of the Equality Act.
Our children have missed several days of school due to delays in transport applications and the chaos of being moved from one Travelodge to another. I’m doing my best to keep working, but the emotional and financial strain is unbearable.
No charity has been able to help. No part of the system seems to care. The Armed Forces Covenant, Equality policies, and even Human Rights protections feel meaningless when faced with this level of institutional neglect. The very documents that prove Stuart’s deterioration—medical letters, OT assessments—are being ignored.
How is the MoD still allowed to recruit personnel without informing them that if they become seriously injured in service, there is no guaranteed help, no housing, no dignity?

Subject: Urgent: Disabled RAF Veteran and Family Made Homeless – MoD Must Be Held Accountable
To whom it may concern,
I am writing in support of Stuart Bunyan, a medically discharged RAF veteran, and his family—who have now spent over two months living in a Travelodge hotel in Lincoln after being evicted by the Ministry of Defence.
Stuart served 12 years in the RAF and now suffers from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), spinal degeneration, and permanent disability requiring a wheelchair. Despite this, the MoD evicted him without making reasonable adjustments or offering accessible alternative accommodation, in breach of the Armed Forces Covenant and Equality Act.
West Lindsey District Council has failed to provide a suitable home, despite occupational therapy assessments, medical evidence, and the family’s long-standing registration since 2021. Their two children’s education is being severely disrupted, and the family has been split between two cramped hotel rooms with no basic facilities.
This is a disgraceful way to treat someone who served their country. It raises urgent questions:
Why was a disabled veteran evicted without safe, accessible housing in place?
Why has no agency—MoD, council, or charity—taken responsibility for his care and housing?
What protections actually exist for service families once a medical discharge occurs?
I urge you to investigate this case and call for immediate action to secure this family the accessible home and dignity they deserve.

Subject: Story Tip-Off: Disabled Veteran Family Homeless After MoD Eviction
Dear [BBC Newsroom / ITV News Team / The Guardian Editors],
I am writing as a deeply concerned member of the public to share the heartbreaking story of a British veteran and his family who have been failed by the very institutions meant to protect them.
Stuart Bunyan served his country for 12 years in the RAF. He was medically discharged with severe, permanent injuries—including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and spinal damage—that left him dependent on a wheelchair. But instead of being supported, he and his young family were evicted by the MoD and left homeless.
They have now spent over 2 months living in two cramped rooms in a Lincoln Travelodge, with no kitchen, no living space, and no certainty about their future. Stuart is isolated all day in pain while his wife tries to keep working and care for their children—who have missed multiple days of school.
The MoD made no reasonable adjustments for Stuart's disability. West Lindsey Council has been unable to provide accessible housing, despite the family being registered for years and having extensive medical evidence and OT reports. No charity has been able to step in. This is not just a bureaucratic failure—it is a moral one.
How can we allow those who served our country to be abandoned like this? Where is the Armed Forces Covenant in practice? What does equality legislation mean if it doesn't protect the most vulnerable?
This is a national scandal that deserves public attention. Please cover this story and give this family the voice they need.
Sincerely,

Story Tip-Off:
RAF veteran Stuart Bunyan, medically discharged with severe injuries, has been made homeless with his wife and two children. They’ve spent 2+ months in a Lincoln Travelodge after the MoD evicted them without any accessible housing solution—despite his wheelchair use and medical condition.
The family has been split across two hotel rooms, their children’s education is suffering, and no agency has taken responsibility. This is a shocking violation of the Armed Forces Covenant and the Equality Act.
This family urgently needs help. Please investigate this story.
