The Issue

From my earliest memories, animals have always held a special place in my heart. I've spent countless moments nurturing and caring for them. This personal journey began with taking puppies to vet appointments, ensuring they received necessary treatments, feeding them, and caring for their mothers. I've witnessed their poignant struggles with diseases, seen them take their final breaths, and even attended their burials. It's heartbreaking and personal. I can't stand idly by while more dogs face the prospect of death due to imprudent judicial decisions.

In India, a directive from the Supreme Court permits the euthanasia of rabid or dangerously aggressive dogs under strict veterinary protocols. Additionally, the court allows the removal of stray dogs from areas with significant foot traffic, despite the Animal Birth Control Rules (2023) being in place. These rules, already a step forward, mandate local authorities to sterilize and vaccinate captured dogs instead of resorting to killing them.

While public safety is undeniably crucial, addressing the concerns over stray dogs can and should be achieved humanely. Euthanizing these animals, especially when solutions such as  vaccination exist, is both extreme and unnecessary. It belies the compassion our society can exhibit and ignores the positive effects of responsible dog population management.

Statistics reveal that through widespread sterilization and vaccination, the spread of rabies can be significantly reduced. Cities and regions that have adopted these measures have seen a decrease in stray dog-related incidents, proving that humane solutions are effective.

Our call to action is based on compassion and science. We urge the Supreme Court of India to reconsider its stance. Our goal is to halt unnecessary euthanasia and to ensure that the Animal Birth Control Rules are enforced across all regions, allowing local authorities to humanely manage stray dog populations.

By signing this petition, you stand for a kinder, more humane approach to animal control. Together, let's put an end to this cycle of needless loss and show that we can coexist peacefully with our four-legged friends. Please sign the petition today to demand ethical and just treatment for every stray dog in India.
