Stop the euthanasia of our beloved family dog, Lady
The Issue
Our family is facing a heart-wrenching decision—a decision that could lead to the unnecessary euthanasia of our beloved dog. Our dog has been a faithful and loving companion, never showing aggression towards any member of our family or visitors who have been properly introduced to her.
Recently, our dog was involved in an incident with a worker sent to fix a leak in our home. The worker, who later revealed he is partially deaf, entered our kitchen unannounced, despite our dog's barking—a sound he may not have fully registered, but whose vibrations he should have sensed. In her confusion and protective instinct, our dog caught the worker's wrist, resulting in a small puncture wound. This minor incident has been blown out of proportion, leading to a decision to put her down.
It's important to understand that our dog did not attack intentionally. Her immediate retreat to the garden after being scolded demonstrates her understanding of wrongdoing and her typically gentle nature. She has never shown signs of aggression, and this was a singular event, spurred by unforeseen circumstances and genuine misunderstanding.
Dogs, like humans, can act out of character when startled or confused. Yet, our dog’s entire disposition has been loving and protective. This incident is not a reflection of her character but a combination of unawareness and her instinct to protect her home. Euthanizing a dog for a first-time, minor incident is extreme and disproportionate and due to her being sold to us as a bully before the ban is a issue in our case. They are currently doing tests to find out her breed.
We are calling on those in positions of authority to consider the circumstances and the dog's history before making such a final decision. Rather than euthanasia, education and closer supervision are far more appropriate responses, ensuring the safety of all involved while preserving the innocent life of a dog who has brought joy and affection to our family.
We urge local authorities to reconsider and allow our dog to continue living with behavioral evaluations and a commitment from us, her family, to require better access arrangements and communication for any future home visits to avoid similar situations. Let's make a more humane choice, reflecting the values of understanding and compassion.
