The Issue

As a concerned parent and neighbor in our close-knit community, I want to draw attention to a developing situation that threatens the safety of our children. A mental health/methadone clinic is being planned to be built directly across from our local elementary school. My child, along with all our neighborhood children, attends this school. The prospect of increased traffic and the presence of individuals who might not be conducive to a safe environment for our young ones is extremely unsettling.

There is no doubt that mental health and recovery facilities are essential in a society grappling with addiction and mental health issues. However, it is essential to consider the location in question's vulnerability—the presence of an elementary school. A report in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse strongly indicates that proximity to drug treatment facilities might serve as a risk factor for early substance use initiation in adolescents (Na, Huedo-Medina, and Johnson, 2017).

The safety of our children should be our primary concern. We strongly urge our local authorities to reconsider the positioning of this planned clinic. It is crucial to strike a balance between supporting those in need and maintaining safe, child-friendly neighborhoods. We believe this balance can be achieved, and it is our collective responsibility to do so. Please sign this petition and add your voice to our call for this reconsideration.
