The Issue

I grew up surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of West Virginia’s breathtaking landscapes. Our state, the land of majestic mountains and winding rivers, has been my home and solace. Yet now, the serenity of this magnificent environment is at grave risk due to the proposed construction of numerous data centers across West Virginia.

Data centers, while essential in our digital age, come with heavy environmental costs. They consume massive amounts of electricity, which is often sourced from carbon-intensive power plants, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, data centers require vast amounts of water for cooling, which puts a strain on local water resources and jeopardizes aquatic ecosystems. According to research from the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers account for about 2% of the country's total electricity use – a number that is only growing.

In West Virginia, a state already grappling with environmental challenges, this could have devastating consequences. Our state’s natural resources, which are not only a vital part of our identity but also crucial for the burgeoning eco-tourism industry, should not be sacrificed for industrial expansion. Instead of allowing these data centers to wreak havoc on our natural landscapes, we must insist on sustainable practices that protect our environment and our communities.

There are viable, eco-friendly alternatives that should be prioritized. Renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, can be leveraged to power these data centers. Furthermore, building practices that conserve water and protect ecosystems must be mandated. Encouraging companies to locate in areas that have already been industrialized, rather than in pristine natural regions, can also minimize the environmental footprint of these facilities.

West Virginia's future depends on us taking a stand. We must urge local government officials, policymakers, and the corporations behind these projects to prioritize sustainable development. Our natural resources are irreplaceable, and their preservation should be our utmost priority.

Join me in this important fight for our environment and our future. Together, we can protect the integrity of West Virginia's beautiful landscapes from the detrimental impacts of unchecked industrial expansion. Please sign this petition to demand action and ensure that sustainable practices guide our development strategies.
