STOP DUKE ENERGY'S WNC PROJECT
Sep 4, 2015
There is no documented need for this project. The transmission site in Campobello nor the lines are needed other than to line Duke's pockets. They are guaranteed a profit when they build infrastructure; it's been proven usage is down. Duke execs last night claimed this project is needed so they can shuttle power across the grid in NC, claiming they don't intend on selling excess energy outside of the state. However, once they overbuild, there is no one who will know what they are doing with what's excess and why would anyone let it just sit there and not sell it??? Additionally, they admitted that this project is meant to enhance redundancy. At present there is availability in TN for Duke to purchase power to provide redundancy in case of an issue. Tearing through the Foothills, ruining our economy and ecology and peoples' life savings is unconscionable. On one hand they say they weren't planning this and didn't get inspired to come up with this whacko idea until this Spring. On the other hand they said last night they've been thinking about it since 2008. On the other hand one arm of Duke surveyed and about 17+ acres of land in Campobello for 2-3x the going rate, putting millions into the pocket of a Spartanburg County legislator's family. This company is a convicted polluter and known for subterfuge and dishonesty. Go to carolinalandcoalition.org or upstateforever.org or mountaintrue.org for more information. Go to through this petition site and read all the articles about what this company is doing and where the natural gas will come from to power the new Asheville plant ---shipped in via pipeline from NYS/PA via another Duke project, now on hold per the BLM for the same reasons this project must be stopped - no environmental nor economic impact studies/no due diligence has been performed. Duke Energy should be ashamed of itself. There are better 'modern' ways to bring power to the Carolinas and they know it. http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2015/09/03/duke-burying-lines-cost-costly/71672302/ http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2015/08/13/groups-towing-lines-opposition-duke/31644899/ http://www.hendersonvillelightning.com/news/4382-county-commissioners-put-power-line-on-agenda.html http://www.hendersonvillelightning.com/news/4383-asked-and-answered-duke-defends-power-line-proposal.html Follow the news coverage - what Duke execs said last night, documented here, contradicts what they've been telling the public since announcing their 'plans'. There has been subterfuge, fibs, fudging, inaccuracies put forward by this company all along the way. Until it's proven by independent studies that this project is necessary, in all or in part, it must be put on hold, just as Duke's other/related project, the Atlantic Seaboard Natural Gas Pipeline (which will fuel the new Asheville plant) has been put on hold by the Bureau of Land Management. NO DOCUMENTATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL/ECONOMIC IMPACT was provided. STOP IT NOW.
