The Issue

On September 12, at noon, a domestic dove will be released (abandoned) on the street at Mary Queen of the World Cathedral in Montreal. While the intent behind this act may be symbolic and rooted in tradition, it's important to recognize the severe consequences it has for the birds involved. Doves, especially those bred in captivity, lack the skills to survive in the wild. These releases ultimately lead to the suffering and often the death of the birds.

Releasing doves, which are not equipped with the necessary survival skills, is akin to abandoning a domestic animal. Unlike their wild counterparts, domestic doves have spent their lives relying on humans for food and protection. When released, they face numerous threats such as predators, lack of food, and adverse weather conditions. It's a cruel practice that prioritizes tradition over the well-being of living creatures.

There's no justification for a ritual that causes harm to animals. Many wildlife and animal protection organizations, such as Cobequid Wildlife Rescue in Nova Scotia, the ASPCA and PETA, have called for an end to such releases, stressing the need for compassionate alternatives. Celebrations can remain meaningful and impactful without causing harm.

We urge Mary Queen of the World Cathedral and its organizers to halt this practice and replace it with more humane and ethical traditions. For instance, using symbolic gestures such as paper doves can convey the same message of peace and hope without endangering lives.

By signing this petition, you help protect innocent animals from unnecessary suffering and promote compassion and kindness in all our traditions and celebrations. Let's ensure that our ceremonies reflect not only our values but those of humanity as a whole.

Join us in calling for an end to the dove release and support a humane alternative that celebrates life without causing harm. Please sign this petition today and be a voice for the voiceless.
