Stop the dollar store from renting space at 1355 Macarthur Blvd.
The Issue
For many of us living in San Leandro, CA, watching our community develop and grow is a source of pride. That's why I feel the need to take action regarding the proposed rental of space located at 1355 Macarthur Blvd, by yet another dollar store. San Leandro is a vibrant and diverse community that deserves businesses which enhance the local economy, uplift the quality of life, and bring people together rather than leading to circumstances that degrade property values and community spirit.
Currently, there are already three dollar stores within a two-mile radius of the Macarthur location. These stores contribute to a cycle that often results in lower property values, a fact corroborated by numerous studies. Moreover, they tend to drive away opportunities for more diverse and enriching retail experiences that our community needs and deserves. Housing redundant businesses creates a saturation that could stifle potential growth, discourage other entrepreneurs from bringing diverse businesses to our area, and adversely affect our neighborhood aesthetics.
The presence of more versatile retail and community-oriented establishments could greatly benefit San Leandro. As residents, we envision a community enriched by unique shops, cafes, art spaces, or family and locally-owned businesses. Such development can lead to job creation, community cohesion, and improved local economy, making our neighborhood a more desirable place to live.
We cannot stay passive knowing that another identical dollar store might occupy valuable retail space. This plea goes out to the City and the landlord of 1355 Macarthur Blvd,—consider the broader interests of the neighborhood. Envision a San Leandro that thrives on diversity, innovation, and community values rather than settling for cookie-cutter solutions that risk the vibrancy of our town.
Join me in expressing our commitment to a prosperous future for San Leandro by opposing this dollar store lease. Let our voices resonate with the decision-makers. Sign this petition and let’s stand united for a better, brighter San Leandro.
