Stop the dog culls!

Stop the dog culls!
The Issue
In many rural Indigenous communities across Canada, dogs run around loose and have puppies. These dogs are not vaccinated or neutered and increase in number, and run around bothering people or even occasionally injuring or killing people. These safety concerns are real, but unfortunately many communities host dog hunts or culls and shoot dogs. Culling is ineffective because the animals shot are quickly replaced. We would like these communities to instead reach out to animal protection organizations to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and adopt out excess dogs. Non lethal dog control has worked in many communities.
Please stop the dog shooting. Culling, especially indiscriminate shooting, removes animals with possible immunity to certain diseases. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/rabies
It is also extremely ineffective, since every single animal killed leaves space for more to move in. The replacement animals will breed more prolifically to replace the ones who were shot.
Shooting animals also traumatizes humans, especially children, and elders who may recall the dog culls employed by government agencies who shot dogs to gain access to children in order to kidnap them to residential schools. The RCMP slaughtered 10s of thousands of Inuit dogs in order to remove their ability to be nomadic and ensure the settling of Inuit in Nunavik.
Fellow dogs are traumatized too, watching their families being shot. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9092908/
There are plenty of humane alternatives to culling. Spaying and neutering programs are expensive but reduce dog bite incidents significantly. www.communitycats.ca
