PETITION TO OPPOSE THE OPENING OF A MARIJUANA DISPENSARY IN KENSINGTON, MARYLAND
To: The Kensington Town Council, Montgomery County Council, Maryland Cannabis Administration
We, the undersigned residents, business owners, and concerned community members of Kensington, Maryland, strongly oppose the eminent establishment of a marijuana dispensary in our neighborhood.
Our Concerns:
1. Proximity to Schools and Family-Friendly Areas – Kensington is a suburban community with schools, parks, and family-oriented businesses. A dispensary in our neighborhood would increase youth exposure to marijuana and normalize its presence.
2. Public Safety & Crime Risks – Studies show that dispensaries can attract increased crime, loitering, and illicit drug activity. We are concerned about the potential rise in safety risks to our families and local businesses.
3. Traffic & Parking Issues – Increased traffic and parking congestion near a dispensary could negatively impact nearby businesses and residential areas, making daily commutes and pedestrian safety more difficult.
4. Negative Impact on Property Values – Many studies suggest that property values decline near dispensaries. Homeowners have invested in this community, and a dispensary could undermine the appeal and value of our homes.
5. Not Aligned with the Community’s Character – Kensington is a historic, family-focused suburb. A marijuana dispensary does not align with the values and vision we have for our community’s future.
Our Request:
We respectfully urge the Kensington Town Council, Montgomery County Council, and Maryland Cannabis Administration to:
• Deny zoning or business permits for any proposed dispensary in Kensington.
* Deny any permit for signage.
• Uphold and enforce regulations that prevent dispensaries from operating near schools, parks, and family-centered areas.
• Consider alternative locations in commercial or industrial zones away from residential neighborhoods.
By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to keeping Kensington a safe, family-friendly, and thriving community.
Sincerely,
472
