Stop the discrimination of disabled road users by the DVLA

Stop the discrimination of disabled road users by the DVLA
The Issue
My name is Hannah I’m 41, and a mother to 2 sons and 3 step children, a wife and I have Multiple sclerosis. I work full time as a therapist in a children’s charity.
I am calling for parliamentary review of the systematic discrimination of disabled road users by the DVLA which has become a recent battle I have been fighting now since November 2024 when I tried to update my licence in to my married name - this became an issue as my PIP award was in my married name but I hadn’t managed to change my licence yet. The issue grew as my motability car arrived but I was unable to get on my own insurance on my own motability car until my name was changed on my licence. So I downloaded the form and was asked - do I have a neurological condition- yes is the answer I do I have MS. So I diligently downloaded the extra questionnaires and filled them in and sent them 3 years worth of consultant letters none of which give any reasons I shouldn’t be driving- my driving is unaffected by my condition hence why I have not reported it prior to this. After weeks and weeks I was told I needed a form completed by the GP and we all know that takes another 4 weeks to get them to do anything followed by another month of waiting for the DVLA to now be told they are requesting an eye test which will further delay my licence. I actually find it rather insulting why make me wait all this time jumping through all these hoops if you weren’t going to believe any of the information provided.
why is it disabled people are not trusted like able-bodied people to make a declaration of their ability to drive? Surely this is putting disabled people at an unfair disadvantage compared to able bodied people. Why ask me to fill in a form if I am not to be believed? Why ask my GP to fill in a form if they are not to be believed? Or does these forms, these unjustifiable decisions we have to wait for allow more public money be wasted keeping corrupt Government departments in jobs and disabled people getting the short straw.
Please if you know people like me who have been affected by this please sign my petition to help me challenge the DVLA, to have this matter debated in parliament as I feel we need to stand up for the millions of disabled people who rely on our cars, being forced to jump through hoops which are not only costly to the tax payer but cause unnecessary red tape for disabled people, GPs and specialist consultants.
There are around 1.22 million disabled drivers in the Uk and I know my story is not alone- let’s stand together and say enough is enough! Equal rights for disabled drivers- life’s hard enough!
