Thank you for signing this petition.
Your support is making a great difference in the campaign to resist the proposed building of a resort on the ‘21 acres’ at Magheramore beach, and to protect the biodiversity of the Magheramore area, including the Magheramore curlew wintering grounds and Magherabeg SAC.
The petition is approaching 5000 signatories today, a dramatic groundswell of concern and awareness.
The strength of the response to the petition has led to formation of the Save Magheramore Campaign committee in Wicklow Town.
Local and national media are taking notice, and all of the relevant Wicklow politicians are now aware of the passionate conviction that is expressed in our collective call for Paddy McKillen Jnr and Matt Ryan to withdraw what has been widely viewed as an erratic and irresponsible planning application.
On East Coast FM last week, Minister for Simon Harris spoke candidly about the general anxiety regarding the fate of Magheramore, making particular reference to the potential effect of the proposed development on Wicklow Hospice.
The Save Magheramore Campaign committee has also received supportive correspondence from Stevens Matthews TD and John Brady TD, both of whom said they believed the growing petition has been heard far and wide and cannot be ignored.
The final date for objections to be made to Wicklow County Council Planning Office is May 5th 2023. It is very important that you consider writing a letter. Each of the TDs who have offered their support has reiterated the importance of cogent objections which are articulated with reference to the County Development Plan. You can find that here.
The best way to begin preparing a letter is to engage with the Creatively Pacific Magheramore planning application. To access the files, type the following code into the 'file search' field in the below Wicklow County Council online planning service link: 23/337
You can find the relevant Wicklow County Council online planning service page here.
If you have any difficulties, you can phone Wicklow County Council and ask to speak to a planning office staff member; they are friendly and dedicated, and they are entirely impartial in their work. The council phone number is 0404 20100.
A fee of €20 required in order to lodge a letter of objection
A public meeting organised by the Save Magheramore Campaign committee will take place this evening (April 25th) in the An Tairseach Ecology Centre, in the Dominican Convent, Kilmantin Hill, Wicklow Town, at 7pm. All are welcome. It will include a brief presentation, a discussion of the proposed development, and an update on the campaign and the petition.
The petition will be printed and delivered to the developers themselves and to senior figures in Wicklow County Council in the coming weeks. You will receive an update on that process in due course.
For now, a figure of 5000 signatures is the target for this petition. That would have been unimaginable two weeks ago. And yet it makes perfect sense today: this controversy involves a clear question of right and wrong. A community of people who understand what is at stake and who feel a deep connection to Magheramore are saying no.
We are now in a strong position to make a historic statement, and to seek a historic decision on Magheramore together.
Thank you for your signature, and for all of your efforts.
