Stop the destruction of koala and wildlife habitats in the Gold Coast
The Issue
My family moved to the Willow Vale/Pimpama area with a dream of living surrounded by nature, where the sights and sounds of wildlife would be a part of daily life. This 'supposedly' wildlife protected area, is now slowly disappearing and is been destroyed in the name of progress. Vast high-density housing projects are encroaching upon this serene landscape, threatening the delicate ecosystem and the survival of precious species like koalas.
This fragile environment has been a sanctuary for countless species, providing shelter and sustenance. Koalas, in particular, are facing a perilous future. According to the Australian Koala Foundation, koala numbers have dwindled to an estimated 43,000 individuals. This number is rapidly decreasing due to habitat destruction, a primary threat to their existence. It's heart-wrenching to witness nature being stripped away, piece by piece, replaced with concrete and structures.
We must question whether the relentless push for development in an already overly congested area of the Gold Coast is truly progress. While urban expansion may seem inevitable, it does not need to occur at the expense of wildlife. Sustainable development practices must be implemented, ensuring nature and human needs coexist harmoniously.
We urge the Gold Coast City Council and planning authorities to halt these developments until thorough impact assessments are conducted and transparent plans for wildlife rehousing and habitat conservation are put into place. Conservation corridors and green spaces need to be integrated into urban planning, not dissected, to protect wildlife and preserve the beauty of our natural surroundings.
This is not just about saving koalas and other species; it's about preserving a way of life and ensuring future generations inherit a world where nature thrives alongside development - our grandchildren deserve better. Join us in speaking for those who have no voice. Let us protect the natural splendour of the Gold Coast before it's irreversibly altered.
Please sign this petition to hold accountable those in power and demand responsible, balanced development that cherishes our natural heritage and prioritises the well-being of its inhabitants. Together, we can make a difference.
