The Issue

For over 20 years, the gardens under the north end of Burrard Bridge in Vancouver have been a sanctuary of beauty, nature, and community spirit. These gardens, carefully tended by dedicated volunteers, have transformed the area into a vibrant and cherished community asset. They offer a serene escape from urban hustle, providing both locals and visitors with a tranquil environment to relax and enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of well-tended flora.

However, this community treasure is now under threat. The proposal to pave over these gardens to make way for additional parking spaces for The Aquatic Centre is not only disheartening but shortsighted. Such a development would strip away this ecological and social haven, replacing it with asphalt and cars. With more people acknowledging the importance of urban green spaces for mental well-being, local wildlife, and environmental health, this move stands in stark contrast to progressive urban planning.

Consider the ecological impact: these gardens host a variety of plants that provide habitats for local insects and birds. Paving them over would disrupt this delicate balance and reduce biodiversity in the area. Moreover, with climate change now a pressing issue, maintaining green spaces is more crucial than ever. Trees and plants play a significant role in carbon sequestration, oxygen production, and cooling the urban heat island effect

We call upon the city of Vancouver and the management of The Aquatic Centre to reconsider this plan. There are alternative solutions that can accommodate the need for parking without eradicating the gardens. Options such as utilizing nearby underused spaces, implementing a shuttle service, or encouraging public transportation can be feasible and environmentally friendly.
