Today, 31st March 2017, news transpired via the Camden New Journal, that Stojan Jankovic, a popular and much loved shop worker at Earth Natural Foods, Kentish Town, has been arrested and transferred to a detention centre in Dorset, where he awaits deportation.
Apparently Stoly (as he is known locally), was signing on at an immigration reporting centre in London (which he has been required to do monthly for the past ten years) when officials bundled him into the back of a van, without any warning.
He has been working and living in the UK for 27 years and was denied political asylum when he left his home country (then Yugoslavia) back in 1991
In the Camden New Journal, his employer states that Stoly that had been paying taxes and National Insurance contributions, and was a hard worker.
Local MP Keir Starmar has apparently intervened today, to request that the Home Office consider delaying Stoly's deportation for 14 days, to give time to put Stoly's case forward.
in the CNJ article, Stoly's employer also said:
"The area of Yugoslavia he is from is now Serbia, but he’s never been a Serbian citizen, he’s never had a Serbian passport and we don’t know if he has any right to live in Serbia either. He is stateless.”
Many local residents are shocked and outraged that such a well loved figure, who has made the UK his home and served his community for decades, should be treated in a such a manner.
Please let us join forces to show our support for him and petition the Home Office to hear his case.
