Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) is delighted to announce that the Sarawak government has decided to preserve the old Nurses' Quarters in Kuching as a historical heritage landmark and has allocated an initial fund of RM2 million to restore it. This was announced by the Deputy State Secretary for Economic Planning and Development at a press conference on 20th March. The quarters are to be repurposed as a transit centre for underprivileged family members of patients receiving treatment at the General Hospital. A water retention pond will be constructed in the area for flood mitigation without demolishing the original quarters.
The works to clear the site and demolish the buildings were halted in August 2024 following an appeal from SHS and a number of meetings were held with the stakeholders including SHS to discuss the options, arriving at this 'win-win' solution.
The success of SHS's appeal is due to tireless efforts of its President and team, and the large number of signatures gathered from this petition which was presented to the Sarawak government.
THANK YOU for signing the petition and please keep supporting our efforts to preserve our precious heritage. If you are not yet a member, do join the SHS, as strength comes with numbers.
