Stop the Demolition of Parkersburg's Citizens National Bank building

Stop the Demolition of Parkersburg's Citizens National Bank building

The Issue

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Citizens National Bank building was constructed in Parkersburg, WV in 1898. Diagonally opposite the Blennerhassett Hotel, it is a fine example of classic revival architecture and has been a familiar sight to residents and visitors for 120 years.

On February 14, the Parkersburg Downtown Design & Façade Committee voted to approve a demolition request to destroy this beautiful building. This decision will be appealed! On April 18, the Board of Zoning Appeals will review the decision.

We know that downtown Parkersburg can be revitalized without destroying the very buildings that make its redevelopment more likely:

  1. Beginning in 2018, West Virginians will have access to 45% in combined state and federal tax credits when undertaking construction on a historic income-producing property. We need time to let this work for Parkersburg.
  2. A study commissioned by American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation reveals that younger Americans are more interested in living and working in neighborhoods with historic buildings. The future viability of our downtown may depend on its historic buildings.
  3. Preserving the Citizens National Bank building protects Parkersburg's unique cultural and historical identity and allows future generations to experience what defines us as a city. The craftsmanship in these buildings can never be reproduced.

We urge the Board of Zoning Appeals to vote NO and reject the Downtown Design & Façade Committee's demolition approval.
