A Small Update

Dear All,

Thank you all so much for signing this petition.  As a 17 year old kid who has always dreamt of making a change, the 94 of you who have chosen to take a minute of your life to sign this petition have made an indelible impact on mine.

When l was a kid, l always went to Mandarin centre. Like many of you, it was my childhood, my place that l called home. Whilst it didn't have anything special or remarkable about it, it didn't have to.  I think what makes Mandarin Centre special to all of us was never the state-of-the-art design or the gentrified luxury stores that seem to be everywhere nowadays. Rather, Mandarin Centre gave us what we as kids and even now as adults what we really want - Cheap food, entertainment, and childhood memories that no one will ever be able to live again. Mandarin Centre has given us so much in our life, so let us give part of our life to fight for it.

Now Look, l hear you thinking “but the system is rigged, it's too difficult to fight for change when l already have so much going on in life”. This, l won’t deny. I won’t deny that, at times, the personal costs do in fact outweigh the benefits, that sometimes we can’t fight against every little thing that's wrong. Yet, to bow to our personal circumstances, or “the rigged system” would be to bow to the very people who want tear down our local businesses, our memories, and our childhoods . Listen, l cannot guarantee that any of you will have any success if you choose to fight. But what l can guarantee is your abject failure if you do not. Change is hard. Change is scary. But change is necessary.

I am not writing this with the expectation that even half of you will respond let alone take action. l understand that it is not your fault, that the system we live in is one where corporations get to throw around their billions to politicians and marketing/PR specialists to lobby for their interests whilst we ordinary folk are burdened by the hardship of our lives, to busy to stop the destruction of what was once our childhood memories, who we were and are as human beings. Yet we as Australians hold the power that millions would have died for just a century ago and if all it takes for evil for triumph is that good people do nothing, than let us, the ordinary people fight for what is right.

Save Mandarin Centre.
