The Issue

The proposed AWS datacenter in Berwick, Pennsylvania, has stirred a considerable level of concern among the residents of the Susquehanna Valley, not least myself. As a member of this vibrant community, the pending changes threaten to fundamentally alter our way of life and the well-being of our local ecosystem. The Susquehanna Valley, with its sprawling landscapes and abundant biodiversity, faces imminent danger as the proposed developments loom.

The AWS datacenter is projected to consume a staggering 92% of the power output from the nearby nuclear power station by 2029. Forcing this infrastructure to its limits spells significant problems for local energy stability and sustainability. Should the proposal go through, more datacenters would necessitate the construction of additional power stations. The most feasible option presented has been natural gas-fueled power plants, which further jeopardizes the environment by potentially increasing carbon emissions and risking air quality deterioration.

This proposal does not just threaten energy resources and air quality; it endangers the very essence of our local ecosystem. Our forests, rivers, and wildlife are home to countless species that could be adversely affected by the infrastructural upheaval and increased pollution that come with such large-scale developments.

While economic development is important, it should not come at the cost of our environment and natural heritage. Sustainable alternatives must be explored to ensure both progress and preservation. We should invest in renewable energy sources that align with both ecological balance and technological advancements.

Our community's future relies on actions taken now to safeguard the environment. I urge the Berwick local government and decision-makers at AWS to reconsider the proposed datacenter zoning. Collaborative discussions must be initiated to explore renewable energy possibilities and more sustainable development practices.

By signing this petition, you are voicing your concern for our environment and emphasizing the need for responsible development. Help us ensure that the Susquehanna Valley remains a thriving habitat for generations to come. Please sign this petition to halt the zoning proposal for large-scale datacenter development in Berwick, Pennsylvania. Together, we can make a difference.
