Lyon Township, Michigan, is on the verge of approving one of the largest industrial developments in its history — a 1.8-million-square-foot data center just a short walk from family neighborhoods and an elementary school.

The project, known as "Project Flex," is being proposed by a California-based developer on land off Milford Road, near Grand River Avenue. What's supposed to be a quiet stretch near several residential subdivisions could soon house a facility running around the clock, with the industrial lighting and constant equipment noise that come with it. Families who bought homes near open land never signed up to live next to a facility this size.

Just as concerning is what a facility like this needs to keep running: massive amounts of water for cooling. In a township where residents already rely on shared local water resources, adding a heavy industrial draw so close to homes and a school raises real questions about what's left for everyone else.

Township officials granted conditional approval back in 2025, but a final vote has never gone through — and community pushback has only grown since, with opposition signs now common across the township and residents even pursuing recall efforts against board members they feel aren't listening.

Lyon Township families deserve a real say before a project this size becomes permanent next to where their kids go to school.
