I live in Urbana, a city that I care deeply about. It's a place where the community is close-knit, where our children play in the parks, and where we enjoy a peaceful and natural environment. Recently, I learned that a proposal for a new data center to be constructed in our city is in the works. While I understand the importance of technological advancement, I believe this development could have drastic, negative implications for our community.

Data centers are known for their significant energy consumption and environmental impact. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers can consume up to 1% of the global electricity supply, and that number is only expected to grow. These facilities require large amounts of water for cooling purposes which could threaten our local water resources. In areas experiencing droughts or limited water access, this becomes a major concern.

Moreover, the construction and operation of a data center in Urbana would likely increase traffic congestion and noise pollution, disrupting the daily lives of residents. There's substantial risk of property devaluation in nearby areas, which would harm local homeowners.

Perhaps one of the most pressing reasons for keeping this data center from opening is Cedar Bog. This is an extremely rare protected nature preserve that relies on ground water to thrive. It is located extremely close to Cedar Bog, which already faces multiple threats yearly. 

The preservation of green spaces and the environmental integrity of Urbana should be a top priority. As residents, we must express our concerns and demand that our local government conduct comprehensive environmental impact assessments before approving any construction. Furthermore, we propose that alternative sites be considered for such developments, ideally those where ecological impacts and community disruptions would be minimal.
