Stop the Danger Cats event in New Westminster
The Issue
The House of Comedy in New Westminster is planning to host the Danger Cats, a so-called "comedy troupe," for two events on September 11 and 12, 2026. This would be nothing short of an insult to the memory of Canada's worst serial killer's victims and the many missing and murdered Indigenous women across the country. As someone who has closely followed the plight of these victims, as well as the ongoing struggle for justice and remembrance, I find the idea of their performance completely unacceptable.
This is not the first time we have had to voice our concerns. A few years ago, thanks to community support and your signatures, we succeeded in cancelling a previously scheduled performance by this controversial group. Let us stand united once again to ensure that our city does not support acts that can be perceived as deeply hurtful to victims' families and our Indigenous community.
The performances by the Danger Cats are not just comedy acts. They can be seen as representing a wider lack of respect and acknowledgment for those who have suffered tremendously in our community. Now, more than ever, we must hold spaces like the House of Comedy accountable for the events they choose to host. By allowing such performers, they are inadvertently sending a message that trivializes the tragic experiences of victims’ families and undermines our ongoing efforts toward reconciliation.
We cannot overlook the pain and trauma that events like this can reinvoke for so many. We owe it to the victims, their families, and every person affected by these tragedies to maintain a community environment that is supportive, understanding, and safe. The House of Comedy should seek performers who encourage healing and unity, rather than those who could perpetuate historical and cultural wounds.
I ask you to join me in sending a clear message that this is not acceptable in New Westminster. Together, we can stand against hosting the Danger Cats and show unwavering support for our community's values of respect, dignity, reconciliation, and healing.
