Stop the Cuts to West Midlands Fire Service

1,946

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on West Midlands Fire Service and the West Midlands Fire Authority to halt all proposed reductions to frontline fire and rescue cover across the West Midlands.

Current options include:

The closure and relocation of Ward End Fire Station.

The total removal of night-time fire cover from stations including Bloxwich, Willenhall and Kings Norton.

The removal of overnight cover from second vehicles at 11 further fire stations across the region. Totalling 14 fire stations at risk.

Reduced emergency response capacity in communities throughout Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.
These proposals would reduce the availability of firefighters and fire appliances, particularly during the night when major incidents can and do occur.

Why This Matters

When people dial 999, they expect a rapid and effective response.

Firefighters attend far more than fires. They respond to road traffic collisions, flooding, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses, medical emergencies and major incidents that place lives at risk.

Reducing fire cover means:

  • Fewer firefighters available when emergencies happen.
  • Increased pressure on crews and appliances that remain in service.
  • Longer travel distances for fire engines.
  • Reduced resilience during major incidents.
  • Greater risk to public safety.

Communities across the West Midlands deserve a fire and rescue service that is properly staffed, properly funded and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Recent Events Show Why We Need More Firefighters, Not Fewer
Major incidents across the region and nationally have demonstrated the importance of maintaining a strong and resilient fire and rescue service.

Every minute matters in an emergency.

The proposed cuts are not simply administrative changes. They represent a reduction in emergency response capability that could affect the safety of residents, businesses and visitors across the West Midlands.

We Call On Decision Makers To:

  • Withdraw all proposals that reduce frontline fire cover.
  • Keep all affected fire stations fully resourced.
  • Maintain current 24-hour emergency response capability across the West Midlands.
  • Seek alternative funding solutions that do not compromise public safety.
  • Work with firefighters, local communities and elected representatives to protect emergency services.
