Today in America, millions of male chicks are culled (killed) each year by various methods in the farming industry. This is because commercial farms for eggs would not make a profit raising them for meat. There is a solution, though! There are 3 types of chickens:

• Egg layers

• Table birds

• Dual-purpose 

The egg industry is currently using egg layers (breeds that lay a lot of eggs) to maximize their egg production, and the meat industry is using table birds (a cross between cornish hens and some other chickens) to maximize meat profits. Dual-purpose chicken breeds lay a fair amount of eggs, and they also produce a fair amount of meat. They are very rare on factory farms.

The Proposal:

The United States government should mandate the use of a dual-purpose chicken on both meat and egg farms, such as the Jersy Giant. Along with that, hatcheries hatching chicks for major egg farms should be required to send male chicks to meat farms instead of culling then.

Why? 

A newborn chick is as aware of it's surroundings as a human toddler, and killing so many of them is cruel. Even if you eat chicken, you can agree this is wasteful to kill so many baby chicks. Another thing that this would do is it would make it so spent hens were sold as meat rather than being ground up for dog food or just thrown away, like the remains of the male chicks that are killed.

How are they killed?

• Macceration (being ground up in a shredding device)

•Suffocation (being stuffed in a plastic bag with other chicks and not being able to breath.)

☆This is esential now because☆

Killing so many chicks is wasteful 

The methods of doing so are cruel

Every day that people wait is many more chicks dead
