The Issue
The Sun City Wildlife Management Committee (WMC) has determined that our community needs to restart the culling of deer in 2026, after a pause since 2020. The estimated cost for this culling process is $70,000, with approximately 155 deer anticipated to be captured and killed via nets that will be set up at various locations throughout our community in plain sight.
There has been NO evidence presented by the WMC that our deer population is suffering from either starvation or disease at present, or in the past. There have been NO habitat studies performed or scientific justification for the metrics utilized to determine an acceptable acreage to deer ratio. The same metrics (approximately 4,000 acres) have been used since 2017, without change and adjusting for the additional acreage buildout of the community.
We urge our local community association (Sun City board members) to explore more humane alternatives for deer population management and hold open forum discussions for viable options that will benefit both the residents and the deer population. Individuals from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department have offered differing opinions from the ones used by the WMC and we request their involvement in these forum discussions. We must explore all options first to find an equilibrium that is satisfactory to coexist. The killing of deer must be a last resort, based on FACTS and sound judgement.
Please help by signing this petition to stop the deer culling in Sun City and advocate for humane and sustainable wildlife management solutions.
