The Issue

🦀 Stop the Cruelty: End the Sale of Live Crabs in Grocery Stores

Petition to:

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),

Food and Drug Administration (FDA),

State Agriculture and Animal Welfare Agencies,

and National Grocery Chains including Harris Teeter, Lowe’s Foods, and others

Why This Petition Matters

Today, on what should have been an ordinary grocery visit, I witnessed something that broke my heart.

In the seafood section of a major grocery store stood a glass tank filled with live crabs — stacked on top of one another like lifeless stones. Their claws were bound tightly with tape, their bodies pressed together so closely they could barely move or breathe.

When I leaned closer, one crab lifted its eyes and looked at me. That simple moment — a meeting of eyes — revealed silent agony, confusion, and helplessness. The others barely stirred, quietly enduring suffering we refuse to see.

These are not mindless creatures. Crabs are intelligent and sentient beings who feel pain and stress. Scientific studies confirm this. Yet we keep them in tanks, starved, bound, and terrified — only to be sold and boiled alive.

This is senseless cruelty disguised as “fresh seafood.”

We Demand Action

We, the undersigned, call on the following organizations and companies to take immediate action:

USDA and FDA:

Establish humane standards and enforcement for the sale, storage, and handling of live seafood across all retail food outlets.
Grocery Retailers (Harris Teeter, Lowe’s Foods, and others):
End the practice of selling live crabs and lobsters in cramped, cruel conditions. Lead by example. Choose compassion over profit.
Lawmakers and Regulators:
Support legislation that recognizes marine animals as sentient beings and protects them from needless suffering.

Why This Must Stop

No creature deserves to be bound, starved, and left to die slowly in a glass box.

No meal should come at the cost of another being’s prolonged agony.

This is not about dietary choices — it’s about human decency.

If we cannot show mercy to those smaller and weaker than us, what does that say about our humanity?

As a nation that prides itself on progress and compassion, we can and must do better.

Our Vision

A day when grocery stores no longer display suffering for sale.

A day when compassion, not cruelty, defines our choices.

A day when we treat all living beings — great or small — with respect and empathy.
