Stop the Crossvine Solar & Storage Project
Concerned Citizens of Holland, Indiana
Why This Project Poses Serious Risks to Our Community
Public Safety Concerns
- Large-scale battery storage (BESS) sites carry documented fire risks, with incidents across the U.S. causing property damage, evacuations, and exposure to toxic chemicals.
- Lithium-ion battery fires release dangerous gases including hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide, and other toxic compounds.
- Proximity to Holland town limits increases potential risk to residents, schools, and emergency responders.
Aviation and Airport Safety
- The project is near Huntingburg Airport approach paths; solar panels can create glare hazards affecting pilot visibility.
- Solar farm height and reflectivity may interfere with safe gliding or emergency landing of light aircraft (Cessna 172, PA-68, etc.).
- FAA consultation or approvals for the project are unclear or may be incomplete.
Environmental and Land Use Concerns
- Large solar arrays impact farmland, local wildlife, and drainage patterns, increasing potential flooding risks.
- Permanent land conversion may reduce agricultural productivity in primarily rural areas.
Community and Municipal Authority
- The Town of Holland lacks zoning protections, leaving residents vulnerable to development without local input.
- The project's proximity to homes and public infrastructure raises quality-of-life concerns: noise, glare, and property values.
Emergency Response and Infrastructure Strain
- Firefighting and emergency responses to battery fires are complex, requiring specialized equipment and training.
- Local fire departments may not be adequately equipped to handle large-scale BESS incidents.
Precedent and Risk Mitigation
- Other communities have halted or relocated similar projects due to safety, environmental, and community concerns.
