I recently heard back from Project manager Matt Hypes: it seems they are still in the design phase, so there is time to influence how this project is carried out.
According to his email:
”The contractor for this project has not yet been selected. Once the design is complete and all required approvals have been received, we will advertise the project for bid. The construction contract will then be awarded to the contractor with the lowest responsive, responsible bid.”
I strongly suggest voicing concerns to Mr. Hype at Matt.Hypes@wilmingtonnc.gov
Given the involvement of old growth trees as well, I also suggest voicing concerns about the destruction of the old growth trees along Hooker Road to city arborist Aaron Reese at Aaron.reese@wilmingtonnc.gov
Feel free to copy and paste from below:
”Mr. Reese,
As a resident of Hooker Road, I have significant concerns about the impact the new Cross City Trail construction will have on the previous few old growth trees left in the area.
The plans to “replant new trees where possible”, is an insufficient solution. There is a known 50% mortality rate for newly planted saplings, and those that do survive can’t even begin to remedy the significant impact loss of the old growth trees will have on the surrounding environment.
Given the devastation being caused by the new housing developments on Hooker Road, these old growth trees are crucial habitats for the remaining wildlife within the shrinking green space, and must be protected at all cost.
Please help propose a design solution to Mr. Hypes that circumnavigates the remaining old growth trees on Hooker Road.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and action.”
Thanks everyone for your support and action!
