Coventry Residents Against School Reconfiguration Proposal

On January 9th, residents of Coventry, Rhode Island were shocked with news of a proposal to reconfigure our schools by Coventry Public Schools. A decision that was to be made in a matter of a few business days…

Residents were notified that only two days later, on January 11th, a meeting of the school committee would unveil the plan, by the superintendent Don Cowart. Meeting Recording.

The community response was clearly a mandate. In complete and full opposition to the superintendent's proposal. His plan reeks of educational jargon, student and teacher disenfranchisement, and ignorance to the children and families that make up this school system.

Countless parents, teachers, educators, and community members voiced their opposition to the proposal. Not ONE voice spoke in favor of the proposal.

At that meeting, it was agreed that the fate of our schools would be decided with a vote on January 16th. 

Why the secrecy?

Why the urgency? 

Why the lack of transparency? 

On January 12th, residents were notified that the meeting will be postponed.

Postponed for the public to receive answers to our questions?

OR

Postponed to give the Superintendent and school committee time to prepare us for the inevitable reconfiguration?

Make no mistake, the Superintendent believes this is the future of our schools.

Our comments will not sway him.

However, our voices must influence the school committee that represent us, tax payers, parents, educators, community members.

We live, we work, and we die in this community. We deserve transparency. We deserve a school system that cares about our children and families. Cares about our local communities that value our local schools. Cares about keeping families, and especially siblings TOGETHER and not separated.
