The Issue

As a proud Nebraskan, the proposal to open the 'Cornhusker Clink' prison for immigrants in McCook fills me with concern and frustration. This isn't just about opposing a facility; it's about safeguarding our communities from the spread of fear and division. The very idea that such a facility could open in our backyard strikes at the heart of our values of inclusivity and understanding.

The 'Cornhusker Clink' is not merely a local issue—it poses significant implications for our entire state. Such a facility could potentially impact Nebraska’s reputation as a welcoming place for all. Recent studies and statistics underline that communities thrive on diversity and inclusion rather than control and segregation. For example, a wide range of research demonstrates that diverse communities tend to be more economically stable and have higher rates of social cohesion.

Moreover, history has shown us that facilities like these often do not serve their intended purpose effectively and instead result in overcrowding and human rights violations, eventually leading to millions of dollars in legal fees and settlements. The New York Times reports numerous cases where poor facility conditions lead to tragic outcomes, burdening local communities financially and morally.

Politicians supporting this facility are not reflecting the majority voice of Nebraska. We, the people, have the power to show up at the polls and reject those who advocate for these misguided initiatives. It’s vital that we communicate our opposition loud and clear and let our representatives know that we do not sanction the construction of the ‘Cornhusker Clink’.

Efforts should instead be channeled into initiatives that truly reflect Nebraskan values—community support programs, local economic development, and inclusive policies that embrace the strengths and potential of every member of our resociety.

Stop the 'Cornhusker Clink' and join us in standing against this facility. Let us demonstrate to the politicians that Nebraskans prioritize compassion over incarceration. Sign this petition and ensure our voices are heard.
