Stop the construction of data centers in Wetaskiwin and Maskwacis

The Issue

The pristine landscapes of Wetaskiwin County and the borders of Maskwacis Treaty Six territory stand on the brink of disruption. As a concerned resident, I am deeply troubled by the potential construction of data centers in our community, threatening the natural harmony and sacred balance that we have preserved for generations.

Our land and water hold immense value, protected under Treaty Six, not just for us but for the future generations who deserve to inherit the clean environment, vibrant wildlife, and fertile farmland we have cherished. A proposed data center project, spearheaded by an international energy company from Norway, risks all of this for the benefit of one single farmer, shadowing the vast impacts it could imprint on us all.

Data centers are known for their significant consumption of resources, including water for cooling systems, that could heavily deplete our local bodies of water. This consumption could disrupt the delicate ecosystems and scatter our wildlife, impacting migration patterns and threatening species that have historically roamed these lands.

Moreover, the environmental hazards associated with such infrastructure include various levels of pollution—from electronic waste to increased traffic emissions—posing irreversible harm to our lands and increased costs for our own energy consumption and service. Studies have consistently shown that data centers contribute disproportionately to local pollution and carbon footprints, which contradicts the stewardship and environmental responsibility bonded by the Treaty Six agreement.

By allowing this development, we risk turning our corner of harmony into a  barren and desolate industrial landscape. We must protect our invaluable resources, not just for the current residents but as our duty to those who will call this place home in the coming years.

Our community’s voice matters. Together, we can urge local government bodies and planning committees to reconsider the approval of any projects that threaten our way of life. Let's stand united to prioritize sustainable development and protect the integrity of Wetaskiwin County and Maskwacis territory. We are the new ancestors and that carries huge responsibility and obligations.

Join me in this crucial fight to prevent any data centers from infringing on our sacred land. Sign this petition to preserve our environment, our culture, and our children's future.
